Coach Andrea

How time flies! This is already my fourth season as a WSSC coach. I have a level two certification and enjoy working with skaters of all ages. I am a former Provincial Speed Skating Team member, Regional Training Center and had to opportunity to compete both nationally and internationally. I also participated in the 2003 Canada Winter Games (CWG) team as a short tracker at the age of 13. I was named an honorary member to the 2007 CWG team after having to give up my spot on the team due to a career ending injury that took its toll and forced me to step aside. Although I can no longer pursue my goals as an elite level Speed Skater, I can help the athletes set and achieve their personal goals in the sport. I am currently studying at the University of Winnipeg and Red River College in the Faculty of Education pursuing a major in Industrial Arts as well as an English degree. I am also spending my first year teaching Nursery school in the afternoons. I have special training in working with Children with ADD/ADHD as well as behavioural disorders and I often bring these techniques to the ice. I believe that children should be able to discover their surroundings. It’s amazing how much children can learn when you let them explore.

Coach Geoff

Wow, when did I get so old? I’ve been skating in circles (quickly) with the Winnipeg Club for 17 years now and have coached for the past decade. I built a reputation for excelling at long distances and having colorful, spiked and/or dreadlocked hair.  After 8 years with the provincial team, many short track records and a whole lot of good fun and mischief, I retired from competing at age 19 to attend university. I spent 5 years at the U of M studying Zoology, environmental science and political philosophy and then set out on my bicycle to explore the continent and seek out adventure. Since returning I’ve done much work with inner city youth teaching bike repair and doing environmental education. After coaching as a full time coach with WSSC for 5 years and being a spare coach for 3, I’m very happy to return as a (mostly) full time coach for the 2009/10 season. My current full time job as an eco-guide will take me out of town for a portion of the winter, but I will be at practice as often as possible and look forward to tearing up the ice once again this winter.

Philosophy

  • Try your best,
  • Skate your hardest,
  • and make PBs.
